Maheshwari sarees take their name from Maheshwar, a town on the banks of the Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh, where the craft is closely tied to the patronage of Rani Ahilyabai Holkar in the 18th century — she is widely credited with establishing the local weaving tradition that continues today. The signature Maheshwari weave blends silk (traditionally in the warp) with cotton (in the weft), giving the saree its distinctive lightweight feel, crisp texture, and subtle sheen — lighter than pure silk, but with more structure than pure cotton.
